What does John Glenn have to do with Trucking anyway?

Can you imagine if NASA actually sent a rocket into orbit that was manufactured with the cheapest parts? I can’t believe it to be true, but if it was, kudos to John Glenn and his courage.

Freight: What is it and where does it come from?

When I was completing my undergrad at Western – 20 something years ago – a few older guys recruited me to play on their ball team in the summer. One of the guys on the team owned his own freight brokerage called MSM Transportation – his nickname was ACE.

I remember on the bench one game he asked me what I was planning to do after I graduated. I said I wanted to be a lawyer and was going to write my LSATS and apply to Law School. He said “You don’t want to be lawyer, believe me I know a lot of them”. He also told me that if my plan didn’t work out to come and see him and he’d put me in sales. Great, I thought – an ACE in my back pocket.

Canada’s fastest growing companies

When I worked for MSM Transportation, one of the owners was a brilliant marketer. He made sure we were always on the Canada’s Best Managed Companies list as well as Profit Magazines Fastest Growing Companies in Canada. Of course, you had to walk the walk to talk to talk. Nothing has changed in that regard. You still need to have the criteria to be on one of those lists. I learned an incredible amount from him over 17 years. Not about running a company, but about separating yourself from your competition, and walking the walk.

I was born in Etobicoke in 1969 but grew up in Mississauga. I moved to London Ontario for higher-learning and spent 4 years there at UWO. After school, I moved to Oakville and got a place with a few buddies. After a few years of the 3 amigos I moved out and bought a townhouse in Oakville, then a few years after that my wife and I purchased a home in Burlington where we still reside.
